José Torres was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He is the eldest of eleven siblings. José grew up in Camden, NJ, which has been called The Murder Capital of the nation. After José graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, he attended Rutgers University before joining the US Army. Upon leaving the military, he joined the Camden Police Department. José rose to the rank of detective. He served in the Intelligence unit, the General Investigation unit, the Special Victims unit, and the Homicide unit. José was also assigned to the Violent Crimes Task Force with the FBI from 1996 to 2001.

José came to Commitment Church in 2006. After serving in various capacities from cleaning to Assistant to the Executive Pastor, José was installed as an Associate Pastor on April 15, 2018. On July 1, 2020 José was also appointed as the Director of All Nations Ministry for EFCA East.

Amongst all of these accomplishments, his greatest testimony is in 1997 he was diagnosed with liver disease and told he needed a liver transplant within 6 months or he would die. After months of prayer, God granted him a life-saving transplant. Praise God for His provision!

José has been married to his loving wife Maria for thirty years and has been blessed with five wonderful children; Carmen, Moisés, Joshua, Paul and Zachary. They also adopted Maria's niece Melinda, who lived with them until she graduated from high school. José and María are also proud grandparents of Frank, Moisés, Jaida, Evan, Keegan, Sophia, and Ella.
